We’re delighted to announce Dronfield Antiques as the winner of Antiques Shop of the Year at the My Local Awards 2026 Yorkshire.
This award recognises businesses that consistently deliver quality, character and outstanding service, and Dronfield Antiques has been doing exactly that for more than 50 years. As a long-established, family-run antique shop, they have built a reputation for experience, honesty and a genuinely personal approach that keeps customers coming back time and time again.
From furniture to artefacts, their stock covers a wide range of styles and periods, appealing to both the trade and the general public. They also work with interior designers, pub designers, restorers and trade buyers, while still making sure they cater for all tastes and budgets. In fact, they believe they probably have the largest selection of mirrors in the area, adding even more to the treasure-hunt appeal of visiting their shop.
Built on decades of experience
Dronfield Antiques began over half a century ago as a part-time business and hobby in a small one-room lock-up shop. From those modest beginnings, it has grown into a respected destination for antique lovers across the region.
What makes that journey even more impressive is the fact that the business has stayed true to its roots throughout. While many shops have changed beyond recognition over the years, Dronfield Antiques has kept the same down-to-earth spirit that first made it popular. It is not about creating a polished, “posh” image. It is about offering genuine antiques, fair prices and knowledgeable service in a welcoming setting.
That approach has clearly stood the test of time. Their biggest milestone, in their own words, is simply staying in business for over 50 years when so many have fallen by the wayside. That kind of longevity says everything about the trust they have built with customers over the decades.
Why customers keep coming back
In a world where so much is now bought online, Dronfield Antiques continues to prove the value of face-to-face service. With more than 50 years of knowledge and experience, they are able to offer help, advice and that all-important personal touch that many customers still appreciate.
They also do things in a refreshingly straightforward way. Their goods are sold ‘as is’, which helps keep pricing realistic and avoids the inflated costs that can sometimes be found elsewhere. Their shop is not about style over substance. It is about choice, quality and honest dealing.
That honesty has helped build a loyal customer base. Much of their business comes through repeat custom and word-of-mouth recommendation, which is one of the strongest compliments any local business can receive. It shows that customers trust them not just for what they sell, but for how they sell it.
One of the things the team enjoys most is seeing people finally find the item they have been searching for. They believe strongly in face-to-face dealing and say they still get a real buzz when customers are delighted with a purchase they have struggled to find anywhere else. That feeling of discovery is part of what makes antique shopping so enjoyable, and Dronfield Antiques has clearly mastered it.
Resilient through changing times
Reaching 50 years in business is no small achievement, especially in a trade that has seen major changes over the decades. Dronfield Antiques has faced its share of challenges and continued to adapt.
They recall that after the Twin Towers attack in New York, the American market collapsed as people stopped flying, which had a significant impact. More recently, the Covid pandemic hit the business badly, and like many independent retailers, they found that footfall never fully returned to previous levels.
What matters is how they responded. Through hard work, changing their approach and reinventing themselves where needed, they kept moving forward. That resilience is a major part of why they are such worthy winners of this year’s award. They have not just survived difficult times; they have remained a valued and trusted independent business in the area.
Part of the local independent community
Dronfield Antiques is not just a shop. It is part of the wider character of the local area. They support many of the surrounding small businesses and play a role in the independent spirit that makes the area so appealing.
They also offer free local delivery and reasonably priced delivery for customers further afield, helping make their service even more accessible. That practical support, combined with their friendly approach, is another reason they have built such a loyal following.
The team clearly loves where they are based, describing the area as one of Sheffield’s increasingly “edgy” suburban destinations, full of independent cafés, bars and restaurants. With no chains and the Derbyshire Peak District just a short drive away, it is the kind of location that adds even more charm to a visit.
A memorable business story
Every long-running business has a few brilliant stories, and Dronfield Antiques is no exception. One of their favourites dates back to the late 1970s, after they had moved into larger premises. A cigar-chewing American walked in and asked, “Whad do you want for the goddam lot?” They struck a deal and ended up with an empty shop.
As they admit, it has not happened again since. Different times. Still, it is a fantastic snapshot of the character and unpredictability of the antiques trade, and exactly the sort of story only a business with real history can tell.
What this award means
When asked about winning Antiques Shop of the Year, the reaction from Dronfield Antiques was simple: “Highly delighted.” They see it as a sign that they must have been doing something right after all these years.
They also hope the win will reassure existing customers and encourage new ones to visit. That feels especially fitting for a business built so strongly on customer loyalty and recommendation. Awards like this are about recognising the businesses communities genuinely value, and Dronfield Antiques is a perfect example.
Looking ahead, they would like to develop their online presence, which they say is still in its infancy, and they also have ambitions to dedicate one of their ten rooms to their “posher stuff” — although, by their own admission, it never quite happens. That mix of tradition, humour and quiet ambition sums them up perfectly.
Congratulations to Dronfield Antiques
At My Local Awards 2026 Yorkshire, we are proud to celebrate independent businesses that bring experience, personality and excellence to their local communities. Dronfield Antiques has done exactly that for more than five decades.
Their win reflects years of hard work, loyal customers and a business model built on honesty, knowledge and proper personal service. In an age of fast clicks and faceless transactions, they remain proudly old school — and all the better for it.
Congratulations to Dronfield Antiques, a truly deserving winner of Antiques Shop of the Year 2026.
And finally, a message from the team: “Thankyou and we look forward to seeing you again soon.”
