We’re delighted to announce Canvas Hair & Beauty as the winner of Hair Salon of the Year at the My Local Awards 2026 Yorkshire.

This award celebrates salons that combine skill, care and a truly personal approach, and Canvas Hair & Beauty is a very deserving winner. Based in Walmgate, York, this welcoming salon has built a reputation for making clients feel comfortable, cared for and confident from the moment they walk through the door. With a focus on creating a positive, professional and friendly environment, Canvas offers much more than appointments in a diary. It offers people a chance to feel better, brighter and more like themselves.

That is what makes this win so special. Canvas Hair & Beauty is clearly a business built on genuine passion for the industry and a real commitment to people. Whether it is a returning regular or someone visiting for the first time, the aim is always the same: to make each client’s day, and hopefully their life, a little better.

A salon built through experience and determination

The story behind Canvas Hair & Beauty is one of resilience, experience and starting again with real courage. The owner’s first business was founded back in 2004 in Grand Cayman, and after later moving to York, Canvas opened in 2020 — right at the start of the Covid lockdowns.

Opening a salon is a major undertaking at the best of times. Opening one during a global pandemic, after taking on an extremely run-down property that needed everything from floors and electrics to plumbing and room building, is another challenge altogether. The lease was signed on 1 March 2019, but as so many businesses discovered, the timing that followed brought huge uncertainty. Work could not always be completed, supplies were hard to get, grants were unavailable, and rent still had to be paid.

Still, Canvas Hair & Beauty pushed through and made it happen. That determination says so much about the business. It was not built in easy circumstances. It was built through hard work, patience and belief in the vision. The result is a salon that has not only survived a difficult start, but has gone on to win one of Yorkshire’s top local awards.

Why clients love Canvas Hair & Beauty

One of the biggest reasons Canvas stands out is its atmosphere. As a small salon, it naturally offers a more intimate and friendly environment, and that seems to be something clients really value. The team says customers often comment on the welcoming vibe, and it is easy to see why.

At the heart of that atmosphere are the people behind it. The team — Sal, Alex and the owner — clearly love what they do, and that passion shines through in the experience they create. In an industry where technical skill matters hugely, the emotional side of the visit matters just as much. People remember how a place made them feel, and Canvas has created an environment where people feel relaxed, seen and genuinely looked after.

That kind of connection is powerful. A salon can be many things at once: a place to refresh your look, a place to talk, a place to take a breath, or simply a place where someone takes care of you for a while. Canvas Hair & Beauty seems to understand that instinctively, and it is a big reason why this award feels so well deserved.

Growing through challenges

One of the most impressive milestones for Canvas Hair & Beauty is simply that it opened when it did and kept going. Launching during Covid would have been enough of a challenge on its own, but doing so while renovating a property from scratch made the journey even more demanding.

Beyond that early stage, another major challenge has been recruiting staff. As a new and initially unknown salon, attracting talented hairdressers was not easy. Many people understandably felt reluctant to leave the security of a salon they already knew, even if they were unhappy there. That can be one of the hardest parts of building a new business: getting others to believe in the vision as much as you do.

What makes the Canvas story encouraging is that the right people did eventually come on board. The owner speaks warmly about feeling lucky in the staff who joined the salon, which says a lot about the team culture that has been created. It also hints at the next exciting phase, with room still for growth and the possibility of adding even more talent in the future.

More than hair and beauty

One of the loveliest things about Canvas Hair & Beauty is that its community focus is not framed in grand statements. Instead, it comes through in the everyday difference the salon makes to people’s lives.

The team talks about providing a welcoming space where clients can feel self-worth, confidence and the reminder that they deserve a little self-love. That is such an important part of what salons do, even if it is sometimes overlooked. A great appointment is not only about the final result in the mirror. It is also about how someone feels when they leave.

The salon’s customer story reflects this beautifully. There is not one standout tale, but rather lots of little stories of people who simply feel better after visiting. Sometimes that might mean being heard. Sometimes it means being looked after for a short while. Sometimes it means releasing stress, enjoying a beauty treatment or just feeling more like themselves again. Those moments may seem small from the outside, but for the person experiencing them, they can mean a great deal.

Canvas also has a strong connection to its local area. The team speaks with real affection about York, Walmgate and the surrounding business neighbours, describing it as such a lovely community. That local pride helps shape the warmth of the salon itself and makes this award even more meaningful.

What this award means

When Canvas Hair & Beauty found out they had won Hair Salon of the Year, the reaction was one of real excitement and happiness. That joy feels completely fitting for a business that has worked so hard to get where it is.

The team says the award means so much because it confirms they are doing the right things and gives them confidence to continue improving. That is one of the best things an award like this can do. It does not just recognise past effort. It gives businesses momentum for what comes next.

For Canvas, it also reflects the relationships they have built with clients. The team feels they are getting back what they give out, which is a lovely way to put it. They look forward to seeing clients, and they feel those clients look forward to coming in too. That sense of mutual warmth and loyalty is a strong sign of a genuinely special salon.

Looking ahead, Canvas Hair & Beauty hopes to grow the team and expand its range of services. One particularly exciting area they are exploring is helping female clients with thinning hair problems, which will involve further education and training. That willingness to keep learning and diversify shows a salon that is ambitious, thoughtful and committed to meeting real client needs.
