Based in Nottingham, the school provides manual and automatic driving lessons. Its instructors have particular experience in supporting nervous, anxious and neurodivergent learners.
Helping people become safe and confident drivers
Gears Driving School was founded in 2017 to help people achieve their goals through safe and confident driving.
Its founder qualified as a driving instructor at just 21. Since then, Gears has grown into what it describes as the biggest driving school in Nottingham.
The business believes learning to drive should involve more than preparing someone to pass their test. Road safety, confidence and support suited to the individual are all important parts of its lessons.
Lessons adapted to the learner
Gears Driving School works with people who may need a more patient or flexible style of teaching.
This includes learners who feel nervous or anxious behind the wheel, along with neurodivergent pupils who may benefit from lessons being adapted to the way they learn.
Driving for the first time can be daunting. Previous experiences, pressure surrounding the test or a fear of making mistakes can all affect someone’s confidence.
Gears gives learners the time and support they need to make progress without placing them under unnecessary pressure.
Starting young and building a successful school
Qualifying as an instructor at 21 was an early achievement for the founder of Gears Driving School.
Building a career at a young age while coming from a less privileged background brought challenges, including the need to establish credibility within the industry.
Those experiences became a source of motivation. Through determination and hard work, the business has grown considerably since 2017 and now has ambitions to become the biggest driving school in the East Midlands.
Watching learners achieve their goals
Every learner arrives at Gears Driving School with a different level of experience and confidence.
Some feel comfortable from their first lesson, while others need more time, particularly if they experience anxiety or have previously found learning to drive difficult.
The team is especially proud of learners who continue working through setbacks and refuse to give up. Watching someone practise, gain confidence and eventually pass their test is one of the most rewarding parts of the job.
A driving licence can also bring opportunities beyond the road. It may help someone secure a job, become more independent or enjoy greater freedom in everyday life.
Supporting the Nottingham community
The founder of Gears Driving School was born and raised in Nottingham, giving the business a strong connection to the city and its communities.
The school provides ongoing support to charitable causes and has sponsored a local children’s football team.
Its instructors also see the effect of their work in the lives of former learners. Passing a test can help someone find employment, travel independently or rely less on other people.
Growing through determination
Starting the business was not always straightforward. Its founder had to overcome the challenges of entering the industry at a young age and growing up in a less privileged background.
Motivation and determination helped Gears continue moving forward. That same attitude has supported the school as it has expanded, welcomed more learners and developed its experience in teaching neurodivergent pupils.
A surprising and welcome win
Gears Driving School told us that winning Driving School of the Year came as a shock.
The surprise was accompanied by a strong sense of gratitude that the work of a local business had been recognised.
The award celebrates the growth of the school and the patience, care and commitment its instructors bring to every learner.
Giving new learners confidence
Choosing a driving instructor can feel like a big decision, particularly for someone who is already anxious about learning.
Gears hopes the award gives prospective pupils confidence that they are choosing a Nottingham driving school with a strong reputation and a genuine commitment to helping them progress.

Plans to reach more learners
Gears Driving School plans to continue expanding across the region.
As the school grows, it intends to retain the approach that has brought it this far: patient tuition, strong road safety standards and lessons shaped around the needs of each learner.
